7 Principles of highly successful email marketing

Many people believe that email marketing does not work but it is in fact a very effective tool if deployed properly. As the name suggests, email marketing is marketing done using the power and speed of internet and email technologies. Many companies succeed through email marketing whereas many do not even get their email to see the light of day.

Most promotional emails end up in spam folders or get deleted without even opening. Some are opened but they are not compelling enough to read or click on the CTA buttons. All these reasons can cause email marketing to fail. If you are looking to get into email marketing or improve the way you are doing it, the following tips will surely come in handy:

  • Have a strong mailing list

There are literally billions of email accounts out there. That is why you should always keep adding to your mailing list no matter how long you think it is. This is easy to do so as you can find relevant subscribers from many sources but the best way to do so is from your social media accounts and your website. Keep a sign up button on your website and ask people to subscribe to your newsletter or email updates when they sign up. That way, it would be consensual and your emails would not be marked as spam by the audience.

  • Timing & Frequency

These two factors are very important when it comes to the reception of your emails. Send frequent emails so that your customers and audience feel connected and part of everything that you are doing. This does not mean that you should start sending emails all the time to the extent that it gets irritating. On the other hand, do not just send emails once in a blue moon about an event or a sale either. That would make the audience feel like you only want to inform them of the sale and do not actually want to connect with them.

  • Do not use complicated designs

Make sure that your email design is simple and easy to read. If every relevant information is in front of the audience, they will be keener to read it rather than searching for something in small text. The simpler it is, the more effective it would be. Try to write more text and fewer photos so you can deliver necessary information properly. Use colors and fonts that attract attention towards the important points that you want to get noticed.

  • Keep your emails short

This is a very important point that most companies overlook. In today’s day and age, everyone is busy. Nobody has the time to go through long emails to sift through the information that they need. Therefore, a short and to the point email is much more effective. It is better to use points instead of paragraphs. That way, the email stays short, easy to read and you get to share every important thing in a single email without making it too long.

  • Personalize your emails

The worst way to write an email is to make it look like it was sent from a computer. If an email seems automated, most people would reject it straight away and they will not feel a connection to the company at all. Therefore it is necessary to personalize your emails as much as possible. Instead of generic emails, address your audience with their names and use first person speech as in you are communicating with them personally. This will make them feel special and they will be inclined to do business with you.

  • Put effort into the subject

The subject of an email is the first thing that people see when they receive an email. It is important that it makes it compelling enough to open. A subject line should be short, concise and memorable. Instead of using spam words like “Sale”, “limited time” and “guaranteed”, try to use the company name with a strong message. Do not use all capital letters either. All these things are red flags for spam detectors. Try to make the email look normal from the subject and not a marketing email.

  • Include a call to action

Most marketing emails are sent to direct customers towards a product or an offer, or to get them to your website. That is why it is important to have a call to action button in your email. This can be in the form of links, hypertexts or actual buttons. Either way, the purpose is the same. Try not to add more than one or two buttons in a single email as it would just confuse the audience. As mentioned before, keep it simple and clean.
